Family days out don’t have to involve expensive theme parks, complicated itineraries or hours spent travelling. Some of the best family memories are made when everyone gets outside, discovers somewhere new and simply has time to enjoy being together.
The secret is choosing an outing that works for the whole family. Young children may be perfectly happy with a trip to a farm or a large playground, while older children might prefer a museum, castle, adventure park or somewhere they can get involved in an activity. If there is a significant age gap between your children, look for places that offer a mixture of things to see and do rather than relying on one attraction.
The great British outdoors also provides plenty of possibilities. A woodland walk can become an adventure if the children are given a simple treasure hunt or asked to spot different birds, trees or insects along the way. A trip to the beach doesn’t need sunshine either: rock pools, shells and a flask of hot chocolate can make a blustery autumn afternoon memorable.
Museums and historic attractions can be particularly good family destinations because they combine entertainment with the chance to learn something new. Look out for family trails, interactive exhibitions and seasonal activities, which can make even a subject that initially sounds rather serious much more appealing to younger visitors.
Of course, planning helps. Check opening times, parking and whether you need to book in advance before setting off. Take snacks and drinks, even if you intend to eat out, because a hungry child can transform an enjoyable day surprisingly quickly. Comfortable shoes are another essential, particularly if you’re planning to explore somewhere on foot.
Choose Wisely
It is also worth resisting the temptation to pack too much into one day. One great attraction followed by lunch and some time to play can be far more enjoyable than racing around trying to tick five different places off the list. Children often remember the little moments just as much as the main event — feeding the ducks, finding a particularly enormous puddle or stopping for ice cream on the way home.
And don’t worry if everything doesn’t go according to plan. Family days out rarely unfold perfectly. Someone will probably get tired, somebody will forget their coat and there may be a minor disagreement over where to have lunch. That’s part of family life.
The aim isn’t to create a picture-perfect day. It’s to step away from the usual routine, spend some uninterrupted time together and give everyone something to talk about afterwards. Sometimes, those are the days the family remembers for years.
